The NY Pancyprian Freedom (Eastern New York) captured their second straight Men’s Open Cup title and their third in four years with a victory in penalty kicks (2-2, 5:4 Freedom in PK’s) over Doxa Italia (California South). The Freedom jumped out early with a 10th minute goal from star striker, Stefan Dimitrov. Doxa would counter before half with a header from Devin Toohey. Dimitrov headed home his second goal in the 66th minute to put the Freedom back up 2-1. Again Doxa responded, this time with a goal in the 75th minute by Bryan Byrne. Doxa lost a man due to a red card shortly before the end of regulation, but they were able to hang on throughout the entire overtime period without conceding a goal resulting in penalty kicks being needed to decide the winner. The Freedom were able to get one timely save from their keeper during the penalty kicks and that was all they needed as they would go 5 for 5 themselves from the spot.
To reach the finals, NY Pancyprian Freedom crushed longtime National Cup finals’ participant, AAC Eagles (Illinois) 6-0. Meanwhile, Doxa Italia advanced with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the ASC New Stars (Texas South). Kyle Holland scored in the 119th minute to lead Doxa over the New Stars and keep the game from going to penalties.
